Drew Workman
Lighting Design, Electrician
Drew Workman is a Lighting Designer and Technician from Augusta County, Virginia.
Since he was young, he has always had a fascination with technology. He would pester his parents frequently with questions such as “How does the radio get its sound?”, “How do Airplanes stay in the air?”, or even “How do cell phones work?”. His fascination led him to develop a niche for stage lighting.
When he was a Sophomore in High School, Drew got his first “gig” as a designer. His school was putting on Beauty and the Beast and he was shown what the director knew about the light board, that being, how to turn on lights, record them into cues, and to press the “Go” button. He built the second half of the show and that’s when the seed was planted. By the time he got to JMU, Drew had designed 3 shows in high school. Once he got to JMU, Drew learned the opportunities he could have in Stage Lighting and that became his sole focus.
Now, Drew has been an Assistant Designer for 3 shows (The Lighting Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical, Anon(ymous), and The SpongeBob Musical), and a Lead Designer for 2 (Mr. Burns: A post-Electric Play and The Antipodes). After graduation, Drew has his sights set on getting a master's degree in Stage Lighting as well as designing for commercial theatres.
